Does your career site attract or repel top talent?

Hire Strategies Limited (HSL) is proud to launch the first industry award for excellence in retail career sites.

Over the past couple of weeks HSL have been announcing the winners in the first ever research of it's kind into the quality and performance of career sites for major retailers in the UK. HSL researched a "top 100" of major retailers from the food & grocery, high street, out of town and retail banking markets, and found a wide range of results.

Overall winner was The Body Shop, but the range of objectively scored results was vast. With many major retailers falling way below their competitors in this increasingly vital area of recruitment they could be losing out in capturing top retail talent and even undermining their employer brand.

· Only 40% of employers got further than stage one of the research.

· Half the sites assessed for accessibility failed to achieve an acceptable level.

· More than 40% of sites have little or no online application system.

The HSL researchers looked at all aspects of retailers online recruitment capability such as "search engine optimisation", "first impressions", "the application process" and accessibility/diversity promotion.

The overall top 3 best rated websites were The Body Shop, Mothercare and Virgin Mobile.

The difference in results across sectors was huge. For example, in stage one of the research T-Mobile scored 84% with O2 scoring 20%. The Body Shop scored 83% whilst House of Fraser scored 13%. Tesco scored 64% and Somerfield scored 11%!

Food and grocery retailers represented only 2 out of the Top 20, with the bulk of the Top 20 being High Street/out of town retailers/non-food.

The Hire Strategies Top 100 Retail Career Sites awards has created a spin-off report: "Retail employer career sites: pride or prejudice?" You can find the report at www.hirestrategies.co.uk/top100. It contains not only results but also recommendations on how to improve site effectiveness, site accessibility and how to automate the application process. There's even a Top 10 Checklist that will help form the basis of a strategy to getting your career site on-track to being the best in your sector.

The full report that ranks all 100 websites and further details about the programme are available from Hire Strategies at www.hirestrategies.co.uk/top100 - if you are a major UK retailer - see how you faired against your competitors! The report also contains a checklist for ensuring websites are working effectively along with a wealth of other information to help retailers stay e-recruitment savvy.
